WB to announce ‘Justice League,’ ‘Wonder Woman,’ ‘Flash,’ ‘Green Lantern’ at Comic-Con

While we’ve heard about most of these adaptations already, a new report suggests that Warner Bros. will be announcing its entire lineup of DC films at Comic-Con next month. Included in the report from NikkiFinke are Shazam (July 2016), Sandman (Dec 25), Justice League (May 2017), Wonder Woman (July 2017), Flash and Green Lantern team-up in Christmas 2017 and then finally Man of Steel 2 in May, 2018. Now, these are a lot of adaptations and a fairly risky move by WB, but it doesn’t mean they won’t be announced. We already know they’re working on a Justice League, Sandman, Wonder Woman and Flash movie based on previous reports, but Shazam and Green Lantern are certainly something that raises our eyebrows. Most of these films are guaranteed to be announced, but Warner Bros. will be taking on a massive amount of risk if they set all of these solo films in motion. They have one movie (Man of Steel) that’s been somewhat successful, and adding half a dozen others is pretty brave. In a quote from the report, some of this is explained, saying, “There will be cameos of superheroes for future installments. The cameos will include the already known Cyborg and Flash. Green Lantern may be introduced. And Aquaman will be seen in the Justice League movie. Problem is, Warner Bros Pictures was still negotiating with the actors for those cameos and future roles, meaning major contracts for multiple JL/character films to follow.” Unlike Marvel, it sounds like Warner Bros. is simply hoping this is what their schedule will look like over the next three years, but it doesn’t mean that’s what we’ll be getting. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be a very interesting movie, but not because of what fans think. If it does well with certain demographics, then WB will move forward with specific superheroes and their solo films. But if the film doesn’t do well, you can slash about half of these solo films off the list. They won’t happen. Warner is going about this a bit backwards, trying to create solo films out of a film full of superheroes, which may or may not work. Marvel built up their solo films over many years and then sprung The Avengers on us and blew everyone’s minds. Warner Bros. is attempting to do the same, except most of the characters won’t be known by the general public other than Batman and Superman. That could end up being a difficult hurdle to cross, as we saw with Green Lantern, but Man of Steel was definitely a move in the right direction. We look forward to finding out what they will be announcing at Comic-Con, but we’re more interested in finding out how well Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice does in theaters May 6, 2016.
